The natural triple helix structure has excellent compressive resistance and mechanical properties, and can form a viscous gel at a concentration of 30mg/mL. The abundant replenishment of type I collagen can thereafter support tissues that are loosening due to aging and sun damage.

The triple helix makes collagen fibers non-stretchable along their longitudinal axis, with strong tensile strength to withstand all the physiological mechanical loads and stresses in our body.

The triple helix also gives collagen resistance to proteases: making collagen one of the longest-lived proteins, and thus acquiring a wide range of acid and alkali tolerances to cope with complex and demanding living conditions.

The triple helix exhibits variable length in supracollagen structures such as webs, fibrils, and filaments. The presence of non-triple helix parts at the end or inside all collagen types extends its function.

Significance of protein purity
The immunogenicity of type I collagen mainly comes from the telopeptide region and some other small molecules, such as telopeptide residues, DNA residues, heteroproteins, etc. Therefore, safe collagen must come with high purity and minimal telopeptide residue to control adverse effect after injection of collagen.

Telopeptides are the short non-helical domains that remain after proteolytic cleavage, and contain the crosslinking residues that drive intermolecular crosslinking among homotypic and heterotypic collagen fibrils. Telopeptide is the main distribution area of type I collagen immunogenicity. 

Enzymatic hydrolysis reaction is to hydrolyze telopeptides into smaller peptides, amino acids and other components with low molecular weight through the action of proteases. The enzymatic hydrolysis reaction conditions are mild and controllable, and the amino acid structure is largely preserved, although the use of enzymes of animal origin (usually porcine pepsin) introduces additional animal components that are usually allergens.

  • Anti-inflammatory ointment can be applied postoperatively, and dexamethasone can be used if allergies occur;
